This week, the Student Union Executive Council considered applications from four student groups who wanted to join the Social Programming Board. Those groups were Team 31, Campus Programming Council, Gargoyle Committee and Filmboard. The Executive Council voted to admit Team 31, CPC, and Gargoyle to the SPB. Those groups were later confirmed by Senate and Treasury.
It should be duly noted that groups were admitted to the Social Programming Board based on their need to be exempt from the Category I budget process and having a primary role to engage the student body through social programs.
Here are some notes from the deliberations:
Team 31
- Cannot fit under the category system because they need money ahead of time to start booking acts. WILD is planned a semester to a year in advance.
- Many of costs are fixed costs that would be hindered by Budget Committee funding rules.
- Primary purpose is to put on WILD, which is the biggest social program at the school.
CPC
- Cannot fit under the category system because they need to purchase alcohol for Happy Hour.
- Primary purpose is to put on social programs geared towards the entire campus.
Gargoyle
- Cannot fit under the category system because they need money on a yearly basis to book artists. Flexibility is important since artists' schedules aren't set in stone.
- Primary purpose is to put on concerts and expose the campus to different genres of music.
Filmboard
- Might function better as a Category I student group to give more felxibility in budgetting by semester instead of yearly.
- Only reason to be exempt from Budget Committee is to fund Midnight Movie Releases; however, these events have no supplemental value to engage students beyond giving them a movie ticket. As a result, the event seems more like a giveaway and not a true social program.
