Tonight at the Treasury meeting, we will be hearing a budget appeal from the College Republicans for $35,000 to have Karl Rove speak on campus on November 3rd.
First, there was not enough time to put this appeal in the backpage ad of Studlife to notify students about the appeal, so we wanted to make sure that students were aware of what was going on.
Second, there have been suggestions that when Treasury is going to hear a large budget appeal, that they try to let as many students know about it ahead of time in case students want to attend the Treasury meeting and give input.
As always, the Treasury meeting will be an open meeting, so any student can attend and participate in the discussions. The meeting will be held today, October 14th, and starts at 9:00pm sharp in Simon Hall Room 113.
The rule for appeals this year has been and will continue to be that an appeal must be submitted before Saturday in order to be on the Treasury agenda for the following Tuesday. This rule is in place for many reasons, including giving Treasury reps adequate time to prepare for the discussion and the decision, giving the Speaker time to prepare for the meeting, and allowing time to ensure that the appealing student group has everything in order. It is not generally unreasonable to ask that groups appeal more than 2 days in advance.
Exceptions are granted to this rule only if the following two conditions are both met:
1) The appeal is an emergency or time-sensitive, and a decision is required by a certain date
2) OSA deems that the event planning is in order (the event is logistically sound and can be well executed)
After considering the circumstances of this appeal, in particular the time-sensitive nature of the event and the contract that needs to get signed, the appeal meets the first requirement.
