Both Art Senators and the Art Council want to aid in achieving your goals! Know what you have to work with...
The Art School Council acts as a resource for current art students to exhibit their work and introduce themselves as serious artists to the Washington University community and to the larger art community of St. Louis
The goals of the Fellowships are to promote on-campus art by providing monetary and developmental support to Wash U students for large-scale installations on campus. Students apply with proposals for semester long projects which will be reviewed by a selection committee of students and campus administrators. This opportunity will be open to any students with creative ambitions. This is also be a good introduction to the fellowship application process for students interested in pursuing careers in public art, while enriching the campus environment.

The Art School Council has been responsible for helping finance student-run art shows in the various art departments. The student-shows propose budgets for material expenses meeting SU guidelines, and we help pay for a portion of the costs. Without this service, most students would not have the opportunity to exhibit and introduce themselves to the St. Louis Art Community and prospective patrons.

Art Students spend a large amount of time at the art school working in studios. They are also students on main campus, taking classes in the other colleges, participating as active members in other student groups, and making use of the resources available to all students of the university. The Art School Council exists in part to bridge the gap between the School of Art and main campus, making students in other colleges aware of the programs and events going on at the art school and bringing art-related activities to main campus.
The Art Prom is the School of Art's annual visual-themed formal that exposes the rest of the university to the School of Art. All members of the Wash U community are welcome to this social event which engages attendees in the various facets of performance. While the ticket sales and other fund raising activities raise a significant portion of the expenses, additional funds are required to cover the entire event and keep ticket costs affordable for all students.

A very important part of the education of an artist is being exposed to other artist's work and their ideas that informed art practice. The lecture series provides a great opportunity for students to expand on their education. In addition to providing the opportunity for Art Students to hear from notable artists, curators and designers; these lectures often attract a substantial portion of their audience from students in other colleges. Whereas Art Council acts to promote not only the existence of physical art on campus but in addition the existence of contemporary art dialogue we feel that these speakers are pivotal to aiding in this very important goal. This lecture series is hosted in conjunction with the College of Art and The Samfox School for Design and Visual Arts.

There are many student groups that either originate in the art school or are directly related to the promotion of art and art education. The Art School Council provides some monetary support for these groups when their budgets or category status does not allow them to complete all of their own goals.
Important speakers come to address the Wash U. community on the role of women in the arts. Art School Council provides support for the CWA.

This blog post is a response to the Student Life editorial published in the Wednesday, April 15, 2009 issue.
I am very happy that the Student Life editorial board wrote about the Student Union budget in the April 15th issue. While the editorial contribute to a necessary dialogue about the budget, its criticisms are based on infactual information.
First, the editorial suggests that since we are not buying the backpage from Student Life at a cost of over $22,000, we are taking away the ability of student groups to publicize their events. First, Student Union will support student group publicity in a number of ways next year including an all-school calendar, the Student Union website, flyers, and magic box screens around campus at no additional charge.
