When will the Beta go live?

We don't have a firm date yet, but it will be sometime during the early fall semester.

This was timed very well with the September release of Mac OS 10.6, which has integrated exchange support. Shared calendars can be manipulated in iCal, and the Global contacts list will be accessible through address book. Cool stuff.

Just don't change the name! SquirrelMail 4eva!

The link to YouTube isn't working for me, so I dregged it from the source of this page.  Just in case this happens for anyone else, here's the link to the video:

Is there some way to opt out of this? I am strongly opposed to giving a 3rd party, especially Microsoft, access to my private email correspondence. I would prefer to continue to use my locally hosted email account.

While I appreciate your concern over third-party hosting, the issues are not really a significant change from those presented by local hosting at WU. Although Microsoft will have potential access to your information, the University currently has this access, and a violation of privacy standards by Microsoft is much more likely to get popular attention. As such, MS would be much less likely to breach this confidentiality without good reason. In addition, because the mail is currently maintained by each individual school, the security architecture is OK at best. With a cloud conglomerate, the security of your information from outside attacks will be greatly improved.

I'm not crazy about third-party hosting of any of my information. Nonetheless, you have to make sure you understand the third-party hosting that is already in place.

sounds awesome!

1. Jeff talks really loudly
2. I am sure people will be up-in-arms about "G-Mail" not being selected, but I have faith in all the work SU (specifically Mr. Nelson), STAC, and the University have put into making this decision.

I think I'll still forward it to GMail like I do with my squirrelmail account. However, the online microsoft office may be interesting.

Jeff does talk really loud!

Some of the applications to share documents will be very beneficial for collaboration for student groups! Great addition to increase communication on campus.
