You shall never take away my Squirrelmail! NEVER!!!!

Seriously: Free & improved or expensive & crappy? Bring on the GoogleApps, Mr. Nelson.

Jeff Nelson is a PILF!!!

Great idea Jeff! One question, where do alumni email addresses fit into all this? It's sort of ridiculous that Wash U is in the minority of institutions that do not let alumni keep their email addresses or even turn them over to a special server. Would the switch to Google make email retention possible? I think this is something to think about.

The switch to Google Apps for Education would make it possible for the University to allow alumns to keep their accounts forever!

Hello, I think that this is a great idea. I actually just forward all my school email to my gmail account and configure the gmail account to send all emails under my WUSTL address. I use a lot of the google features like the calendar and the todo list. There are a few questions that I have: 1) Does the school already have a binding contract with the current email providers? If so, this is a potential problem. 2) Is it possible that google will make this service not free at some point? I don't know if this would happen but we may have the same problem later on. I suppose that these would be some things that the administration would have to consider. But again, I like the idea and I hope that it gets passed. --Alex A.

1. The University does not currently have a binding contract. We provide email ourselves without own servers, and offer in house technical support, etc. This is why there is a cost associated with the University providing this service.

2. It is possible, i suppose, but the University would sign a contract so Google would not be able to do so during the length of the contract.

Alex, thanks for your comments.
