Important Updates to Category Structure

Good Morning Presidents and Treasurers,

I am writing with very important information regarding group categorizations and some changes that Student Union’s Financial Leadership have made. Please note that your group will only be affected by the below changes if you choose to opt-in to a category that is different than your current one, using this WUGO form. If you do not fill out the form, there will be no effect on your group.

The new category structure introduces two new categories of Student Union recognized groups, meaning that there will now be five categories instead of three. Below is a list of all resources that are available to student groups as well as an outline of each of the 5 categories:

Student Union Resources:

  • Printing money/copy code

  • Reserving rooms

  • Paint room & underpass usage

  • Mailbox

  • Student Union office supplies

  • SU storage, if available

  • SUPR

  • Fundraising account, if needed

  • Priority Activities Fair access

Category 5:

  • Access to all SU resources

  • Will receive no funding

  • Cannot submit appeals

Category 4:

  • Access to all SU resources

  • Receives a flat $150 per year to be deposited in the Fall semester and unused funds will be retrieved at the end of each fiscal year in June

  • Do not have to submit a budget or follow any rules/caps in the Budget Allocation Manual (including the 90% rule)

  • Cannot submit appeals

Category 3:

  • Access to all SU resources

  • Receives a flat $350 per semester and unused funds will be retrieved at the end of each semester

  • Do not have to submit a budget or follow any rules/caps in the Budget Allocation Manual (including the 90% rule)

  • Up to three appeals per semester, subjected to a $1,000 cap on overall funding from Student Union. This cap does not apply to appeals for speakers, off-campus conferences, or equipment.

Category 2:

  • Access to all SU resources

  • Can submit budgets up to $500 per semester

  • Have to submit a budget

  • Up to three appeals per semester, subjected to a $1,000 cap on overall funding from Student Union. This cap does not apply to appeals for speakers, off-campus conferences, or equipment.

Category 1:

  • Access to all SU resources

  • Can submit budgets without an upper limit

  • Have to submit a budget

  • Up to three appeals per semester with no upper limit

You can refer to the “category comparison” (attached) for a visual on the similarities and differences between the categories.

We are sharing this information about the category structure so you and your group leaders can decide if you would like to opt-in to move your group into one of the new categories. As I mentioned, there will be no changes to your group’s current category (besides the name for current category 3 groups). This means that:

  • Current category 1 groups will be automatically placed into category 1

  • Current category 2 groups will be automatically placed into category 2

  • Current category 3 groups will be automatically placed into category 4

However, if would like to move from your newly placed category to any lower category, please fill out this WUGO form. For example, if you are a category 2 group, you are eligible to opt-in to be moved to category 3, 4 or 5.

The form will close on February 5th at 11:45PM and after that, the process of changing categories will have to go through Activities Committee. For a visual on category placements and opting-in, please refer to the “new category structure” visual attached.

For the groups that decide to opt-in to the new category 3, there is no need to worry about submitting a budget for the Fall 2019. If you have already, don’t worry about it (we will inform Budget Committee).

The deadline to submit budgets for the Fall 2019 is tomorrow (1/30 at 5PM), which we understand is before the form to opt-in to the new categories is due. So, please submit your budget by tomorrow if you do not submit the WUGO form before then and, should you choose to opt-in to category 3 after you submit your budget, we will work with Budget Committee to make sure you receive the $350 and your budget will be disregarded.

We understand that this is a lot of new information but want to stress that you will only be affected by these changes if you decide to be. Please reach out to me if you have questions about any of the information and/or if you want to talk through whether to opt-in to a new category or not.

Best,

Shelly
